Pre-Columbian, Dominican Republic, Taino peoples, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A lovely hand axe of a petaloid form, hand-carved from a mottled brown stone with light and dark veining. The handle is smooth with rounded edges, faces, and butt, slightly convex faces, and a spatuloid blade head with an arching edge. Hand axes like this were typically employed during ceremonial events or left in tombs as funerary offerings. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 3.7" W x 7" H (9.4 cm x 17.8 cm).
