Pre-Columbian, Caribbean, Hispaniola, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A large, carved stone "zemi" figure with a mystical, cadaverous appearance. The figure is dominated by its enormous eyes and skull-like empty nose. Instead of arms, it has large, concave ovoids on either side of its body. The figure is squatting, its spindly legs drawn up under the body, its tiny toes nearly touching at the front. Along its chest are incised lines that appear to be ribs, further emphasizing the figure's skeletal style. The head is crested, with circles inside of triangles incised on either side of the head. The figure also has a bump above its legs that may be interpreted as a phallus. Size: 4.2" L x 3.2" W x 6.9" H (10.7 cm x 8.1 cm x 17.5 cm)
Taino art is comprised of many religious objects associated with the worship of "zemis" - a term referring to deities, ancestors, or earth spirits believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits. Owners of zemi figures have traditionally honored them with offerings of food or precious gifts. Each Zemi had its own identity and name, personality, distinct characteristics, and powers.
