Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A wonderful necklace of wearable form constructed with dozens of hand-carved stone beads interspersed between even greater numbers of ancient gold seed beads. Evenly distributed along the middle of the composition is a set of 7 gold pendants, each of abstract form that perhaps depicts a tumi or a ritual spoon. The Tairona produced some of the most complex and beautiful gold alloy objects ever made in the New World. These pendants would have been worn by someone powerful in the society, and they may have indicated a clan affiliation or role. Size (necklace): 21" L (53.3 cm); (largest pendant): 0.14" L x 0.30" W x 1.14" H (0.4 cm x 0.8 cm x 2.9 cm); gold quality: 85.99% to 86.66%; total weight: 21.8 grams

Provenance: private West Palm Beach, Florida, USA collection, beads acquired prior to 2010
