Description:

Europe, probably Italy, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A matching pair of Baroque styled tall altar candlesticks made from heavy repousse brass. Repoussé is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Each of these has a central shaft made of a combination of scrolls and volutes, raised on a richly adorned tripod base with foliage motifs and a series of Christian religious figures, representing the Holy Family. Each side of each tripod features a bust within an oval frame, so that either Christ, Mary, or Joseph is displayed on each side. Size of each: 5.85" W x 25.75" H (14.9 cm x 65.4 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990
