Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A rather tall Chancay standing figure, hand carved from one piece of wood, the face painted in hues of red with eyes comprised of black irises on white diamond-shaped sclera. The overall form of the head and body is characteristically abstract and pleasingly minimalist. Care was taken to emphasize the facial features and, perhaps most endearingly, the toes. He or she wears a finely woven textile as a poncho that is beautifully adorned with figural and geometric motifs in hues of chocolate brown, rose, and ochre, quite fitting as the Andean artisans are known for their superlative textile production. Beneath the poncho two holes are carved at the shoulders, probably for attaching articulated arms. Includes custom stand. Size: 8" W x 26.25" H (20.3 cm x 66.7 cm); 27.75" H (70.5 cm) with stand
