Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North or West Africa, Tuareg / French Touareg, ca. early 20th century CE. An intriguing iron currency hoe featuring a thick, round base that narrows to a rectangular grip, and then a slender, cylindrical shaft that is topped with a rounded head. The sides of the head extend downwards, creating drooping wings on both sides. A gorgeous russet patina envelops the entirety of this unique example. Currency pieces like this example are used in exchange for goods and services, but they are also an important component of the ceremonial marriage dowry payment.
