Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1070 to 712 BCE. A tall mummiform ushabti with a well-defined face and arms raised to its shoulders, holding a hoe in each hand, made from faience of delicate blue-green hues. The head wears the classic nemes headdress and false goatee of a mummy. Interestingly, the surface shows charred areas caused by a fire. Size: 1.7" W x 6.5" H (4.3 cm x 16.5 cm)

Ushabti (or shabti) dolls are figures shaped like adult male or female mummies in traditional form. The ancient Egyptians believed that after they died, their spirits would have to work in the "Field of Reeds" owned by the god of the underworld, Osiris. This meant doing agricultural labor - and it was required by all members of society, from workers to pharaohs. The wealthier nobility in Egyptian society were able to have ushabtis made of faience who would stand in for them as workers; blue faience was meant to reflect the color of the river Nile both on earth and in the afterlife. During later periods like this one, people from the middle class were also able to purchase faience ushabtis and save themselves from an afterlife of eternal labor.
