Description:

Naqada Culture, probably Naqada I, pre-Dynastic Egypt, ca. 4400 to 3500 BCE. This is a beautiful redware jar of ovoid form with a curved base and a slightly rolled rim. The surface is a rich, burnished red with an oxidized black at the top -- black topped ware is a mark of the Naqada I. This culture inhabited ancient Egypt in the pre-Dynastic period, and were first described by famous archaeologist William Flinders Petrie, but relatively little is known about them except that they were focused around the site of El-Amra in central Egypt, west of the Nile. Custom stand Included. Size: 6" W x 8.5" H (15.2 cm x 21.6 cm).

Cf. Brooklyn Museum, Pre dynastic and Archaic Egypt, no. 4. and Ancient Egyptian Art at Yale no 3.

Provenance: Ex. North German Collection; purchased from the estate of an archaeologist who owned this in the 1960s to the 1970s.
