Description:

East Africa, Kenya, Mijikenda culture, Giriama people, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A weathered wooden kigango (memorial post), carved from a single hardwood plank and presented on a custom metal stand. This tall, slender post features a stylized anthropomorphic head at the top, with incised circular eyes and a narrow, elongated nose and mouth. Below the face, the body of the post is adorned with rows of geometric zigzag, diamond, and chevron motifs with remains of white pigment. Kigango posts are traditionally erected to honor deceased male elders of the Gohu society, a Giriama age-grade fraternity. These commemorative figures were placed at the deceased's homestead shrine and later relocated to sacred forest groves during funerary rites. These served as a conduit between the living and ancestral world and as a symbolic record of the deceased's life. Size: 4.25" W x 56" H (10.8 cm x 142.2 cm); 58.5" H (148.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA collection, acquired December 1996; ex-Chip Coronel collection, acquired in 1990; ex-Ernie Wolfe collection, acquired in Kenya in the 1970s
