Description:

Egypt, late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Periods, ca. 712 to 30 BCE. One of the more striking, pretty examples of a faience ushabti that we have seen. The faience is a pale, seafoam blue-green, and the figure was made so that its features are relatively smooth, with just hints of the mummiform shape and the two hoes held in the crossed arms at the shoulders. You'll want to touch the wonderful texture of this figure! Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.75" W x 6.8" H (4.4 cm x 17.3 cm); height on stand: 6.9" (17.5 cm)

Ushabti (or shabti) dolls are figures shaped like adult male or female mummies wearing traditional ancient Egyptian headdresses. The ancient Egyptians believed that after they died, their spirits would have to work in the "Field of Reeds" owned by the god of the underworld, Osiris. This meant doing agricultural labor - and it was required by all members of society, from workers to pharaohs. The blue faience used to make these figures was meant to reflect the color of the river Nile both on earth and in the afterlife.
