Description:

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A beautiful pottery mingqi (tomb figurine) of a horse and rider, created as a burial offering to serve the deceased in the afterlife. The horse stands proudly, its strong body painted in dark pigment with bold red and cream highlights forming decorative saddle blankets. Seated atop is a rider dressed in a long, flowing robe still retaining traces of vibrant cold-painted pigments in shades of purple, red, and white. His arms are extended as though to hold reins, his head capped with a hat, and his face painted with a mustache. These mingqi were meant to symbolize status, wealth, and protection, providing their owner with loyal service in the afterlife. A stunning representation of Tang-era artistry and the cultural significance of equestrian figures in funerary practice. Size: 13" L x 3.5" W x 12.25" H (33 cm x 8.9 cm x 31.1 cm)
