**Originally Listed At $300**

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A set of three hand-carved wooden masks depicting characters from the Indonesian Topeng dance tradition, including a king known as a Dalem and two "strong or authoritarian" figures known as Keras, who often serve as high-ranking assistants to the king. The Dalem mask typically represents a heroic figure, such as a king or prince, marked by a small forehead diadem to signify their status. Each mask is painted and embellished with strips of leather, along with attached animal hair for the eyebrows and mustaches, adding to their expressive and dramatic appearance. Size of king: 8.6" L x 6" W (21.8 cm x 15.2 cm)

Topeng masks are worn during dramatic dances in Bali and, to a lesser extent, Java, depicting traditional stories of kings, princes, heroes, and myths. In these performances, a small cast of four or five actors plays all the roles, both male and female, requiring each performer to use up to forty different masks. It is believed that actors share a special bond with their masks, entering a trance-like state that connects them to the spiritual world. The Topeng dance originated in the 17th century, with the word topeng literally meaning "mask" in Indonesian.
