Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A captivating ensemble of three solid pottery figures from ancient Jalisco, each modeled with distinctive form and personality. The tallest represents a nude male standing with delineated phallus and slightly bent arms, his face rendered with calm, naturalistic features. The two smaller figures depict females, identifiable by their petite breasts and elaborate coiffures - one standing with white painted decoration suggesting jewelry and garments, and the other seated with outstretched limbs and a broad, flared headdress accentuating her stylized neck and shoulders. Unlike the hollow tomb figures more typical of neighboring regions, these solid examples embody a compact, sculptural presence that emphasizes mass and physicality. Size of largest (male): 2.5" W x 5.7" H (6.4 cm x 14.5 cm)

Figures such as these were integral to the funerary and ritual traditions of West Mexico, often placed in shaft tombs as attendants or symbolic companions to the deceased. Their balanced representation of male and female forms may evoke themes of fertility, lineage, and the cyclical harmony of life and death. Rendered in earthy red and cream slips with traces of painted detail, this trio exemplifies the regional artistry of Jalisco - a culture celebrated for its lively, expressive, and profoundly human ceramic sculpture.
