Pre-Columbian, Bolivia, Lake Titicaca region, Tiahuanaco / Tiwanaku, ca. 400 to 700 CE; Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 500 to 1000 CE; Mexico, Ulua Valley, Maya, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A fine group of three Pre-Columbian pottery vessels, each representing a distinct regional tradition. The Maya Ulua Valley bowl, painted in deep red and black slip, displays bold geometric bands and linear decoration characteristic of Honduran ceramic production during the Classic period. From the highland Andes, the Tiahuanaco jar is decorated with a complex black-on-red pattern of interlocking motifs across its rounded body, reflecting the sophisticated iconography of this expansive culture centered near Lake Titicaca. Completing the group is a Costa Rican tripod dish, supported on three conical legs and painted with checkerboard and linear designs on the interior, the vibrant red slip enlivened with black detailing. Size of largest: 7.9" Diameter x 3.8" H (20.1 cm x 9.7 cm)
Together these vessels reflect the diversity of Pre-Columbian ceramic artistry, from ritual drinking bowls to serving dishes and storage jars. Such pieces not only functioned in daily and ceremonial life but also served as symbols of identity and prestige within their respective societies.
