Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Jemdet Nasr Period, ca. 3100 to 2700 BCE. A group of three carved stone cylinder seals, each bearing figural and symbolic imagery tied to early Mesopotamian cosmology and power. The darkest seal, of mottled black stone, features twin arched wave patterns, within which winged figures - perhaps deities or hybrid beings - stand in mirrored poses. The central seal, carved from pale pink-gray stone, presents a vivid hunting scene: several ungulates, likely gazelles or deer, rear up on their hind legs as they are beset by lions in dramatic confrontation. The smallest seal, rendered in a peach-toned stone, is softly worn from age and use, yet its impression reveals an archer taking aim at a stalking lion or leopard, capturing a moment of stealth and pursuit. Size of black seal: 1.2" L x 0.4" W (3 cm x 1 cm)
