Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan and Colima, pre-Classic and Classic periods, ca, 500 BCE to 200 CE. A charming and well-preserved group of three West Mexican ceramic flats, representing distinct regional traditions of early shaft-tomb culture. ) The first is a finely made standing female flat from Michoacán, displaying the characteristic elongated form and surface detailing of the region. Her body is adorned with stick-drawn incised embellishments, including geometric motifs and the classic diamond-shaped eyes, a hallmark of early Michoacán anthropomorphic abstractions. She wears a simple headdress and her posture conveys a poised, graceful presence typical of Pre-Classic West Mexican female effigies. 3) The group also includes two male flats from Colima, each shown standing with clearly indicated loincloths, belts, and simple body modeling. These flats reflect the Colima preference for minimalistic silhouettes combined with expressive incised details. .Size of largest: 2.75" W x 5.5" H (7 cm x 14 cm)
These figureslikely once part of larger tomb assemblagesrepresent the ritual and social importance of ancestor imagery, gender identity, and community roles within West Mexican ceremonial practice A well-matched and highly displayable grouping spanning both Michoacán and Colima styles from the early West Mexican ceramic tradition. Their schematic proportions, rounded heads, and lightly incised clothing elements align with early Colima sculptural traditions, which favored symbolic representation over anatomical realism
