Pre-Columbian, Bolivia, Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku), ca. 400 to 1100 CE. A delightful ceramic vessel, hand-modeled into the form of a bellowing jaguar/coatimundi/chimera with a long, bulbous body, a tiny, perky tail, four nub-like legs, and a head with perky rounded ears, closed slits for eyes, and a large nose above the wide open mouth. A strap handle spans the back of the neck to the upper back. Geometric motifs in black and white decorate the animal's body, mirroring the motifs of ancient textiles from this culture.
