Pre-Columbian, Chile, San Pedro, Atacama Desert, Tihuanaco/Tiwanaku, ca. 400 to 700 CE. A hand-carved wooden snuff tray with a prone jaguar perched upon the raised end with a stepped border, its tail forming a loop handle, its head with inlaid turquoise or shell eyes and nice relief features, facing the flat area for holding and preparing hallucinogenic substances. The form of the jaguar was revered throughout the Pre-Columbian New World as the mightiest wild feline and was used as a symbol of power and kingship. Size: 7.125" W x 2.5" H (18.1 cm x 6.4 cm)
