Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A monumental ceremonial seal composed of sheet brass and high-purity silver over what is likely a dense pottery core, giving it substantial weight. The finial is adorned with a red enamel inlay and repousse floral scrolls and a dharma wheel motif, emblematic of Buddhist teachings. Just below, the neck is pierced and fitted with a braided vegetal-fiber suspension cord. Each of the four sides feature repousse silver panels, depicting a rich tableau of fauna - including deer, birds, and other ungulates. These scenes are framed by brass borders, with traditional Himalayan style ornamentation. The iron base and seal face are finely etched with a lotus flowers. Stamp seals were used by high officials in the Tibetan Royal Court to certify the text of decrees, however the large and ornate stamps such as this were often symbolic pieces that might be only used in ceremony then displayed on an altar or carried as symbols of devotion and religious authority. Size: 2.5" W x 9" H (6.4 cm x 22.9 cm); silver quality: 94% to 98%
