Lot 155
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A serene Tibetan marble sculpture depicting a seated Hindu female deity, likely Tara, shown in calm meditation with hands pressed together in anjali mudra (gesture of reverence). Carved from pale marble, the figure sits cross-legged upon a double-lotus pedestal, her robes delineated with incised lines across the torso and legs. Her face is sensitively modeled with downcast eyes, gently arched brows, and a serene expression beneath a tall pointed headdress. Tara is one of the most beloved female deities of the Buddhist and Hindu pantheons, worshipped as a savioress and compassionate protector. In Tibetan tradition, she appears in numerous manifestations, often invoked for guidance, compassion, and deliverance from suffering. The use of marble and the devotional pose suggest this figure once occupied a private altar, where its luminous surface and votive presence would have served as a focus for daily ritual practice.
