Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A silk and canvas thangka painting depicting a seated, meditative Buddha at the center, surrounded by figures, deities, and animals - possibly symbolizing various Jataka Tales. Vajrayana Buddhism has characteristics that set it apart from other Buddhist traditions, some of which can be perceived as "gruesome" or intense. In the lowest register of figures, a prone body is being consumed by four tigers, while to the right, a seated man in a litter receives eyeballs as offerings from another figure. Faint script is present between the figures. The canvas painting is framed by layered brocade silk panels, but the verso remains visible, featuring a simple ink sketch of a stupa. The silk textile is affixed to wooden rods, allowing it to be rolled for transport, and is covered by a thin silk veil. Size: 39" L x 23" W (99.1 cm x 58.4 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired between 1960 to 1990
