Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Venezuela, Andean region, Timoto-Cuica culture, ca. 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery idol depicting a seated anthropomorphic figure whose gender is undefined. The figure sits with outstretched legs, an upright posture, stocky arms draped gently atop the thighs, and a broad neck. The rectangular head features bulging, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a perky nose, an incised mouth, tab-shaped ears with perforations meant to display additional ornamentation, and an incised striation across the forehead terminating in a pair of protruding nodules. Pale orange slip covers the figure and gives it a fine presentation. Size: 2.625" W x 3.6" H (6.7 cm x 9.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Eugene Lions collection, Geneva, Switzerland, acquired before 1970
