Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Chilkat River Region, Tlingit, ca. early 20th century CE. A fabulous hide dance skirt known as a Chilkat skirt with a plethora of abstract zoomorphic motifs painted across the obverse with black, white, red, and turquoise pigment. The skirt is lined on the bottom with dozens of slender tassels as well as a row of cowrie snail shells, with a serrated lateral fringe, and a pair of leather tie straps to bind the skirt around one's waist. The front is expertly decorated with an abstract wolf head in the center, flanked by a pair of abstract birds, and topped with a petite face bearing white-and-black eyes and mouth. The surfaces were likely rubbed with mink oil to preserve the leather and enhance the remaining pigment. Size (skirt): 25.5" W x 16" H (64.8 cm x 40.6 cm); (display case): 3.5" L x 29.5" W x 23.5" H (8.9 cm x 74.9 cm x 59.7 cm)
