Description:

Toby Ivey (American, 1944-2007). Two abstract compositions. Mixed media with paint on posterboard, 2001. Both signed and dated at lower right. These two bold and enigmatic compositions by outsider artist Toby Ivey shimmer with symbolic suggestion and playful abstraction. Executed in 2001 using mixed media on repurposed poster board, both works present large, centrally placed symmetrical forms that hint at angelic, animal, or spiritual figures, while ultimately resisting clear identification. The upper piece features a composition dominated by radiating, wing-like shapes. A torso-like column of cobalt blue divides the canvas vertically, widening at the top into two powerful orange-red arcs. These forms seem to suggest wings or shoulders in mid-lift, flanked by glowing orbs of yellow. Below, a spotted skirt or shell motif in orange and lavender cascades downward. The backdrop is brushed in soft green, lavender, and gray, reinforcing the sense of surreal isolation. Size of larger: 25" W x 19" H (63.5 cm x 48.3 cm)

The lower panel mirrors the symmetry and sense of elevation. Two central green triangular forms edged in white and divided by a thick yellow line rise like a mountain pass, robe, or monumental figure seen from behind. Rounded orange forms hover at either side, perhaps suns or ceremonial symbols. The space between the shapes draws the eye upward, creating a rhythm that feels both organic and architectural. Ivey's use of poster board emphasizes his commitment to accessible, everyday materials. His palette - vivid yet earthy - and his repetition of mirrored forms lend the works a ritualistic energy. Though abstract, both compositions suggest transformation, duality, and elevation - themes common in religious, folk, and visionary art.
