Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Guatemala, Soconusco region, Toltec civilization, 900 to 1200 CE. A wonderful plumbate pottery jar, a distinctive style of pottery from late Classic and early Postclassic Mesoamerica. Plumbate pottery is distinguishable by its characteristically lustrous glaze that is fired at very high temperatures. This vessel depicts a handsome man with ornate facial hair and almond-shaped eyes who kneels on one knee while holding both hands in front of his protruding chest. The back of the body doubles as the man's dramatically hunched back which is surmounted by a broad, cylindrical spout. A fine example of a Toltec effigy vessel. Size: 5.8" W x 6.4" H (14.7 cm x 16.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Barakat Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA, acquired prior to 2000
