Tom Duimstra (American, b. 1951). "Cat Man" mixed media: painted wood sculpture with bottle caps and beads, 2000. Signed and titled on lips; titled again at lower left. Signed and dated on verso. A fantastical and fun mixed media sculpture by American artist Tom Duimstra depicting the visage of a man with feline features, crowned by a pair of tigers. Boasting vibrant hues of aureolin, blush pink, tangerine, cerulean, and forest, mint, and spring greens, the abstract and evocative face displays four projecting whiskers, painted, bottlecap eyes, a beaded brow, gritted teeth between fleshy lips, and a bottle cap beard, all further embellished by areas of red glitter. Size: 7.4" W x 8.5" H (18.8 cm x 21.6 cm)
Artist statement: "My work expands outward from a central point of minimalism, into a world of texture, color, and mark-making. The work communicates an artistic balance of receiving and giving, looking and responding, that is intended to draw viewers in and invite further contemplation. I seek to create a conversation between universal and personal visual language by incorporating elements of the everyday into my work. I start with a vague idea, and set sail. The end of the journey usually has nothing to do with the beginning, but its been a long, strange trip.
The use of ubiquitous materials and discarded objects is important to my artistic process, which involves manipulating and presenting materials in new contexts. I am interested in investigating the ways in which aesthetic value and meaning are created and assigned, by both the artist and the viewer. These artifacts are representations of that exploration."
