Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. Three finely worked silver lamp elements including a curvaceous base section and two matching bell-shaped lanterns featuring stylized tendrils and linear motifs in repousse, all meticulously hand hammered, expertly molded, and chased. The lanterns are also adorned with decorative openwork lower borders. Silversmiths of the 18th century had very few tools available to them - little more than a raising hammer, a ball-pein hammer, heat, and an anvil. The artisan diligently hammered, bent, worked, heated, cooled, and annealed the silver to create remarkable works of art. Any stress marks attest to the difficulties associated with annealing heavy gauged silver. Size: lanterns measure ~ 7.75" W x 6" H (19.7 cm x 15.2 cm); base element measures 4" W at widest x 5.625" H (10.2 cm x 14.3 cm) Total Weight: 68.3 oz. (1936.27 g.)
