Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A group of three hand-carved wooden masks representing characters from the traditional Balinese Topeng dance. Included is a Patih Manis mask, depicting a prime minister in the royal court; its red-orange coloration symbolizes strength and power, as well as a hint of unrestrained temper or anger. The Dalem mask, typically representing heroic figures such as kings or princes, is painted white - a color associated with purity. Both masks are adorned with animal hair applied to form expressive eyebrows and mustaches. The third mask, featuring an upturned snout and sharp teeth, may represent Jatayu, the divine vulture from the Ramayana epic. Size of green mask: 9.25" L x 7.75" W (23.5 cm x 19.7 cm)
