Description:

Rome, 2nd to 3rd Century CE. This is a trio of cast bronze Maenad (Bacchantes) heads, each with flowers in her hair and eyes inlaid with minerals. Bronze appliques like these were decorative additions to many items in Roman society. In ancient Greece, the Maenads were the most important members of Dionysus's retinue; their Roman equivalent was the female entourage of Bacchus, the Bacchantes, who are often shown wearing fawn skin and cavorting drunkenly with various beasts of the forest. On these three heads, the eyes give each a unique look. Size of each: 1.75" W x 1.75" H (4.4 cm x 4.4 cm); mounted on custom stand, all three together are: 6.2" W x 4" H (15.7 cm x 10.2 cm).
