Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A compact group of three Roman lead alloy phallic amulets, or fascina, each cast with pronounced curvature and suspension loops for wear or attachment. Their surfaces retain a soft, pale patina consistent with lead-based alloys, lending them a subdued, utilitarian presence. In Roman belief, the fascinus served as a powerful apotropaic charm, intended to deflect the evil eye and guard against misfortune. Worn openly and without embarrassment, such amulets reflect the Roman talent for combining superstition, humor, and practicality into objects that were small in scale yet rich in cultural meaning. Size of largest (curved phallus): 1.5" L x 1" W (3.8 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: private Dayton, Maryland, USA collection; ex-private F. B. collection, Maryland, USA, acquired between 1990 to 2010
