Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Tula Valley, Toltec culture, ca. 10th to 15th century CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery plate of a shallow form resting atop a trio of elongated, tab-shaped feet. Displayed within the basin is a very abstract head - perhaps belonging to a feathered serpent, a bird, or a snake with an extended serpentine tongue - surrounded by a border of stylized geometric motifs - all in red and black on an orange ground. An intriguing example! Size: 8.05" in diameter x 2.8" H (20.4 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of the late Father Bader, University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, USA; exhibited in the University of St. Thomas Art Gallery, acquired prior to 2000
