Description:

Southwestern United States, Ancestral Puebloan (Tularosa tradition), Pueblo III., ca. 1175 - 1300 CE. Arresting for its four-part cruciform layout, this globular jar is painted in inky black over a creamy white slip with lozenges of tight hachure, and stepped-fret motifs divided by broad framing lines; opposing small strap lugs at the shoulder allow suspension. Hand-built by coil-and-scrape from fine clay, then smoothed and slipped, the vessel belongs to the celebrated Tularosa Black-on-White corpus, where mineral-paint designs were fixed in a reduced-atmosphere firing to achieve striking contrast. The rounded base and neckless mouth suggest a utilitarian role - likely for storing or transporting water or seeds - while the bold iconography may allude to rain clouds and cosmological order central to Puebloan lifeways. Size: 7.5" D x 6" H (19.1 cm D x 15.2 cm H)

This piece has been TL tested. Results show a last firing date consistent with the dating presented herein.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection, ex Arizona collection.
