Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok (Si Satchanalai), ca. 14th to 16th century CE. An attractive pair of pottery jars, each boasting a lidded, apple-form body on a ring-shaped foot, all skillfully hand-painted with blue-on-white decoration of abstract lattice, linear, and vegetal motifs. Sawankhalok in North-central Thailand, is one of the largest ceramic-producing centers in Southeast Asia during the 14th century. Thai wares such as these examples have been found widely distributed from the Philippines, Java and Sulawesi, to Japan. In Southeast Asia, they were often used as 'pusaka' or heirlooms, while in Japan, Thai ceramics were used in the tea ceremony tradition. Size of larger (darker): 5.3" Diameter x 4.6" H (13.5 cm x 11.7 cm)

Crafted in 14th-century Sawankhalok, a prominent ceramic center in north-central Thailand flourishing from the 13th to 18th centuries, these rounded stoneware boxes embody the region's renowned kiln-fired artistry. Following Emperor Hongwu's export ban on Chinese ceramics during the early Ming Dynasty, Thailand seized the opportunity, becoming a major exporter of Sawankhalok ware throughout Southeast Asia during the "Ming Gap" (1368-1487). These small, lidded boxes, designed for storing spices, powders, cosmetics, betel nut preparations, and medicines, feature thick, curved bases and precisely fitted lids topped with elegant, incised lotus bud handles. The surfaces are adorned with subtle underglaze hues, overlaid with meticulously hand-painted lines and intricate, radiating circular designs, including sinuous vines with vegetal scrolls, linear medallions, and concentric incised patterns.
