**Originally Listed At $350**
North America, Southeastern United States, possibly Cherokee, mid-20th century CE. A handwoven basketry vessel that features a lidded design and a dish, both crafted from pine needles using a coiling technique. The construction involves layers of twisted needle bundles, secured with raffia and hemp, and the basket lid is fastened with cotton cords. Pine needle basketry is a traditional craft of the Cherokee people, with origins spanning centuries. This technique was later adopted by enslaved people on plantations in the region and, during the American Civil War era, became a valuable skill among white women when resources were scarce. Today, pine needle weaving remains a popular craft, practiced and sold by both Native and non-Native artisans. The specific maker of these pieces is unknown. Size of lidded vessel: 7.5" L x 5.5" H (19 cm x 14 cm)
