Description:

Ancient Central Asia, southern Azerbaijan and northern Iran, Ardabil region, Amlash, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A pair of grayware pottery pouring vessels with a minimalist form, each featuring a hemispherical body, a gently inward-curving rim, and a broad, flared spout, all resting on slightly flattened bases for stability. The underside of the smaller vessel's spout has a delicate stippled pattern. These Amlash vessels were often buried in large megalithic tombs associated with the Marlik culture. Despite its proximity to the influential Mesopotamian civilizations, the high Zagros and Elburz Mountains provided a geographical barrier that kept the region relatively isolated, fostering a unique ceramic tradition that developed independently. Size of largest: 7" L x 5.5" Diameter x 3" H (17.8 cm x 14 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: Private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s
