Description:

Near East / Central Asia, Late Byzantine era, ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A pair of pottery bowls from the Late Byzantine era, each coated in a glossy mint-green glaze with deep green accents. Both bowls are wheel-thrown with low foot rings and wide, gently curving walls. One is adorned with incised spiral motifs executed in the sgraffito technique - the design achieved by carving into the surface before firing. Dabs of copper-based pigment were applied beneath the transparent glaze, which flowed during firing to produce the signature streaked or splashed appearance that characterizes this regional ceramic tradition. The exteriors have white marine calcite encrustations, suggesting the bowls were part of a shipwreck during transit - evidence of their circulation across the Mediterranean. Size: 6" Diameter x 2.5" H (15.2 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from a Los Angeles, California, USA gallery acquisition dates range from the late 1990s to 2005
