Description:

Pre-Columbian, North/Central Coast of Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A pair of pottery vessels, one in classic Chimu blackware and the other in buff terracotta. The blackware jar features a hemispherical base evoking a squash, its surface covered with nodules, with the shoulder encircled by a raised band of abstract avian forms rendered in zigzagging lines and incised triangles. The buff vessel presents a rounded body with a single handle and mold-impressed figures on both sides: one showing a standing anthropomorphic figure framed within a textured ground, the other depicting a fantastical spiral, fish-like hybrid. Size: 5" L x 7.25" W (12.7 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; buff: ex-Freeman/Hindman Auctions, Chicago, Illinois, USA, part of lot 285; ex-Donald Wonder collection, California & New Jersey, thence by descent; blackware: ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private Carroll collection, Georgia, USA, by descent; ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, acquired 1960s
