Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A pair of finely made Chimu blackware vessels, each exemplifying the culture's mastery of form and surface decoration. The larger stirrup-spout vessel presents a globular body with a stippled ground from which stylized ulluchu fruit emerge. One fruit projects from the side of the stirrup handle, while a void on the opposite side suggests the former presence of another, now missing. Ulluchu fruit, often depicted in Chimu and Moche art, were believed to have ritual and symbolic associations, potentially linked to fertility and sacrificial rites. The smaller companion vessel features a rounded form with two loop handles ingeniously rendered as stylized arms that terminate in hands with clearly delineated fingers grasping the rim. Encircling the shoulder is a register of relief spiral motifs bordered above by a stippled band, a decorative detail that adds texture and visual rhythm to the glossy black surface. Size of larger (stirrup): 5.9" L x 4.5" W x 7.3" H (15 cm x 11.4 cm x 18.5 cm)
Together, these vessels embody the Chimu aesthetic of elegant simplicity infused with symbolic meaning, representing both the natural and spiritual worlds.
