East Asia, China, Neolithic period, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A pair of hand-built pottery vessels, each embodying the inventive ceramic traditions of Neolithic China. The first, a broad-bodied jar with twin strap handles, is adorned with a lattice of crosshatched and diamond-patterned motifs in dark slip, creating a tactile and rhythmic surface design. The second, a wide-mouthed jar with gently flared rim and bulbous body, is painted with bold curving bands and geometric patterns in black slip over a burnished orange-red ground, its decoration emphasizing balance and symmetry. Vessels of this type were more than utilitarian-they often carried symbolic and ritual weight, used in food storage, offerings, or ceremonial contexts. The painted surfaces reflect a growing sophistication in ceramic aesthetics during the Neolithic, anticipating the long Chinese tradition of marrying form and ornament. Size of larger: 6.9" L x 7.3" W x 4.8" H (17.5 cm x 18.5 cm x 12.2 cm)
Together, these vessels illustrate the technical ingenuity and artistic expression of early Chinese potters, their painted motifs echoing the rhythm and harmony found in nature.
