Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A charming pair of miniature alabaster stone vessels. The jar is a petite size with a flat base and rounded shoulders under a short lip. The opening is finger sized and likely intended to hold small volumes of kohl eye makeup which could be applied with a finger or applicator. The tray is an ovoid shape with a rounded but stable base and shallow basin. Hold either of these vessels to the light, and you will be able to appreciate the marvelous translucency of the stone. Alabaster was prized for its stunning banding and coloration, and even such simple vessels, were highly valued and likely owned by the wealthy or elite. Size of tray: 2.675" L x 1.75" W x 0.5" H (6.8 cm x 4.4 cm x 1.3 cm); jar: 1" W x 1.25" H (2.5 cm x 3.2 cm)
