Description:

France, 1802 and 1803 CE. A pair of truly beautiful antique French maps, probably by the same hand and from the same book, one depicting French and Dutch Guinea (Guiane Francaise et Hollandaise) and the other depicting the Caribbean (Indes Occidentales). The former is by far the larger, and is attributed to J.B. Poirson (Jean-Baptiste Poirson, 1761-1831), Ingenieur Cartographe, from Messidor, An. 10 in the French Republican Calendar (roughly June 20 to July 18, 1802). Poirson seems to have been successful at both cartography and politics, because he was able to make maps for Louis XVI from 1786-1789, and for Napoleon from 1803-1811. Both maps were engraved by Tardieu l'Aine, who worked at No. 385 on the Rue de Sorbonne, the street leading to Paris' ancient university. Both have excellent details and the Caribbean one is of particular interest as it shows the French colony of Louisiane immediately before its purchase by the Americans. Size: 22.15" W x 16.2" H (56.3 cm x 41.1 cm)
