Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Polynesia, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fine example of a stone for playing 'ulu maika, an ancient Hawaiian sport similar to modern American bowling, where players rolled discs like this one down a specially prepared path. The stone is porous and volcanic. Accompanying this is a large poi pounder, also made from porous volcanic stone, with a knob-shaped handle, a rounded shoulder, and a pounding surface which gradually widens from the neck down. This item would have been used for preparing a major staple of the indigenous Hawaiian diet. Size of largest (pounder): 5.5" W x 7.4" H (14 cm x 18.8 cm)
