East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Taisho period, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely matched pair of Japanese porcelain chargers, one rendered in vivid underglaze blue with iron red, gray, pale green, and gilt accents, and the other in just the traditional cobalt blue. The larger charger displays a bold floral motif of peonies and cherry blossoms cascading along a fence, framed by a decorative border. The verso includes an incised seal mark within the foot ring and is reinforced with a copper suspension mount. The smaller charger presents a tranquil, Chinese-style landscape with mountains, a thatched pavilion on stilts, pine trees, and flocks of birds, with a red square seal mark integrated into the scene. The reverse of both dishes is adorned with traditional cobalt-painted botanical sprays. A wooden display stand is included. Size of larger: 18" Diameter x 2.25" H (45.7 cm x 5.7 cm); smaller dish: 15" Diameter x 2" H (38.1 cm x 5.1 cm)
