Description:

Near East / Central Asia, Persia (Iran), Seljuq to Ilkhanid Dynasty, ca. 11th to 13th century CE. A pair of cast leaded bronze cheragh (oil lamps), each resting on a flared, octagonal pedestal base. One lamp features a double-spouted body with a bird-form finial perched atop a hinged lid and incised winged lions flanking each side - mythical guardians symbolizing strength and divine protection. The second lamp has a single spout and is crowned by an ovoid handle surmounted with a stylized bird, likely emblematic of blessings and celestial connection. In Persian culture, such oil lamps were rich in symbolism - embodying divine guidance, spiritual protection, and ritual purity. Lighting them was a sanctified daily act, often accompanied by prayers or blessings. Cheragh were integral to life-cycle events and ceremonial observances, from Nowruz (New Year) celebrations to births, marriages, and funerals, where they served both spiritual and protective roles in domestic and communal settings. Size of double spouted: 3.25" L x 3" H (8.3 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-T.F. Holy Lands collection, formed since the 1960s
