Description:

Native American, southern United States, Mississippian culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A pair of Mississippian ground stone axe heads carved from dense, speckled stone and shaped in the classic three-quarter grooved form characteristic of Southeastern Native American toolmaking traditions. Each axe features a central groove running across three sides of the body, designed to secure the head to a wooden haft using rawhide or fiber bindings. The surfaces show careful shaping and smoothing, producing a rounded profile with a pronounced ridge that defines the groove. Three-quarter grooved axes were widely used throughout the Mississippian period for woodworking, tree clearing, and construction, activities closely tied to the agricultural lifeways and mound-building societies of the region. Their robust form and balanced weight made them practical working tools while also reflecting the skilled stoneworking traditions of Mississippian artisans. Size of taller (both similar in size): 4.5" L x 1.8" W x 3" H (11.4 cm x 4.6 cm x 7.6 cm)

Together, these examples illustrate the functional design and durable craftsmanship of Native American ground stone implements.
