Description:

Native American, North America, Woodland period, ca. 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. A well preserved pair of Woodland period stone woodworking tools consisting of a polished celt and a full-grooved axe head, both carefully shaped from dense stone through pecking and grinding techniques. The axe head features the characteristic encircling groove that allowed it to be securely hafted to a wooden handle with fiber bindings, while the celt was designed to be mounted directly into a split wooden haft. The celt displays a particularly telling sign of practical use. The sides of its cutting edge have been worn smooth through repeated sharpening and contact with wood, creating a polished contrast against the otherwise rougher pecked surface of the stone body. This smoothing is a clear indication of prolonged use and maintenance by its maker. Size of larger: 5.4" L x 2.3" W x 3.5" H (13.7 cm x 5.8 cm x 8.9 cm)

Tools of this type were essential implements for Woodland communities, used in tasks such as woodworking, tree felling, and the construction of dwellings, canoes, and other wooden objects. The pair reflects both the durability of stone tool technology and the skilled craftsmanship that characterized Native American tool production over many centuries.
