Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas Culture, ca. 600 to 200 BCE. A fine pair of hand-built pottery bowls from the Paracas culture, each carefully burnished and decorated in the tradition of this early Andean society renowned for its artistry. Both bowls are shallow, hemispherical in form, with smooth interiors that highlight their refined surfaces. The larger example is slipped in a deep brown hue with a broad red band circling the rim. Incised motifs of stepped and geometric patterns encircle the body, while the surface bears a soft polish that reflects the Paracas emphasis on visual harmony and craftsmanship. The smaller bowl is painted in rich red with black geometric detailing, its outer walls decorated with a register of diamond and step-fret motifs framed by parallel bands. These designs are emblematic of the Paracas visual language, conveying cosmological order and cultural identity. Size of larger: 7.3" Diameter x 3.3" H (18.5 cm x 8.4 cm)

Bowls such as these would have served both utilitarian and ceremonial roles, used in daily feasting as well as ritual offerings. Their strong geometric patterning and contrasting slips reflect the Paracas mastery of polychrome ceramic tradition, a precursor to the Nasca style that would later flourish in the same region.

Narrower bowl was published in: Rosenzweig, Alfredo., Woloszyn, Janusz Z.. Offerings for the Afterlife: Peruvian Pottery and Artifacts from the Maiman Collection. Israel: AMPAL/MERHAV Group of Companies, 2008. Pp 38. Fig 10.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; narrower bowl: previously bequeathed to the Museum for Islamic Art, Jerusalem, Israel, stored for many years and exhibited in 1988; ex-Yosef A. Maiman collection, Consul of Peru A.H., acquired in 1993; ex-Kate Kemper collection, Switzerland, acquired in the 1940s or earlier; wider bowl: ex-Artemis Gallery, Louisville, Colorado, USA; ex-private southern California, USA collection, acquired March 2007; ex-Artemis Gallery, Louisville, Colorado, USA
