Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of bronze apotropaic amulets representing the fascina, the divine phallus of ancient Roman religion and magic. The larger example features two projecting phalluses extending from a central pair of testes, topped by a suspension loop for wear. The smaller amulet takes the form of a winged phallus with an integral loop at the top, symbolizing vitality in flight. In Roman belief, the fascinus embodied protective and generative power, serving as a "doctor against envy" (medicus invidiae), a charm to repel the evil eye and other malevolent forces. Such amulets were suspended in homes, public spaces, or worn upon the body, particularly by children and soldiers, to channel virile energy and divine protection. Their laughter-inducing obscenity itself was thought to divert misfortune and nullify envy, a principle deeply embedded in Roman ritual life. Size of larger (double phallus): 2.3" L x 1" W x 0.8" H (5.8 cm x 2.5 cm x 2 cm)

The cult of Fascinus was overseen by the Vestal Virgins, who guarded the state’s sacred phallic emblem (fascinus populi Romani) and hung effigies beneath the chariots of triumphing generals. These small amulets, both humorous and holy, carry that same ancient belief in the apotropaic power of fertility and laughter.
