Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, perhaps Mezcala & Maya cultures, ca. 200 BCE to 900 CE. A beautiful necklace strung with 20 ancient hand-pecked and polished cylindrical and spherical greenstone beads on a modern chain as a wearable necklace! The beads are arranged along the gunmetal chain at balanced intervals. To the ancients of Mesoamerica, green symbolized life, fertility, and power- and greenstones and jade had an important ritual symbolism in Mayan society and were often used in ceremonial contexts and as jewelry for the elite. Size of longest cylinder bead: 2" L x 0.3" W (5.1 cm x 0.8 cm); chain: 27" L (68.6 cm)
