Description:

Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 300 to 32 BCE. A wooden panel painted with an Egyptian Ba Bird, a human-headed falcon wearing a tri-partite black wig with long lappets, magnificent wings delineated with stylized feathers, and the feet set apart on a striped and slightly tapered rectangular base. The Ba was imaginatively portrayed as a human-headed bird, whose duty was to reunite the soul with the body. The Ba-bird was often shown hovering over the deceased's mummy or leaving or entering the tomb at will. This piece may have been part of a sepulchral tablet or outer coffin, locations where a Ba Bird might alight. A very rare example. Custom lucite stand. Size: 3.625" W x 8.125" H (9.2 cm x 20.6 cm)
